I know that this isn’t clarinet related, but we're searching for a new concert piece for percussion solo + wind orchestra... I would love to learn about some new pieces and I know that this BBoard is often visited by many professionals…So where to ask better than here?
We have a large percussion group (Standard 6 persons (One professional), but it's possible to extend it to 30 if necessary) and they all play all sorts of percussion….Our orchestra is playing at the highest level.
If you now some Titles then they’re very welcome!

I am afraid I do not have any real seggustions, but I am very interested in the Idea. When I was in high school band we tried to play a piece called Ghost Train by Eric Whitacre, we had six percussionists and they really could not manage. When the Eau Claire wind ensemble played it the guy playing marimbas had to throw a rubber ball at the bass drum in or to get the hit and get back to his part in time!I don't know if there is also an orchestral arangement, but its an absolute blast to play and to listen to. What is the orchestra called, and where do you play? it sounds like a pretty cool thing,

Karel Husa wrote a concerto for percussion and winds. I don't remember the exact title. Good stuff. Probably about 30 years old.
Also cool is Daugherty's UFO, but I think that's for one percussionist.

If we don't find a piece for the whole percussion group, then there will be a chance that only the professional percussionist performs a solo with orchestra... so already thanks for the suggestions!

There is (somewhere!) an arrangement of Darius Milhuad's Concerto for Percussion for wind Orchestra - I played this many years ago (nearly 15 years!!) it was at the Royal Military School of music Kneller Hall in Twickenham SW London - you could try them direct or just search the web. probably easier!
I think this might have been for one performer only though (but playing many instuments)

Thanks for the suggestions so far!
I have listened to samples of the pieces mentioned and like them already, but the percussion could be more in the headlights.. if you know what I mean.... We have a very good percussion group and it would be very nice for them to have a piece where they really can “explode”

David Gillingham uses a LOT of percussion in most of his pieces, especially Apocolyptic Dreams. David Maslanka wrote a concerto for marimba and wind orchestra several years back (my old band director was the marimba-ist who premiered it). Eric Ewazen wrote a concerto for percussion and wind ensemble. William Craft wrote "Concerto for Four Percussion and Wind Ensemble." Adam Gorb wrote "Elements: Concerto for Percussion and Wind Ensemble." I believe Joseph Schwantner also wrote a concerto for percussion however I don't know if it was originally written for percussion and winds, but it was arranged by Boysen for wind ensemble. I've only heard one or two of these but I found these in my database. This was just the beginning! Good luck!

Odd sidenote ... David Maslanka's brother was my chemistry teacher 35 years ago ... I had never heard of David Maslanka until a few years ago.

Small world. Yeah, David Maslanka is one of the nicest composers and most open that I've ever met. Several years ago a friend of mine sent him a score that he had written and Maslanka gave him a detailed analysis of things that were good and things that could be improved upon. A really nice chap indeed. Lives out in Montana.

I would suggest Awayday by Adam Gorb. It has a really nice percussion solo and there is a band and an orchestra version. Both versions have a nice sound, and a percussion solo in the middle.

My wind ensemble just did a concertino for percussion ensemble and wind ensemble by Gillingham. It's a fantastic piece and I highly recommend it.
I also recommend any works by David Maslanka. He came to my university a few weeks ago. He's a wonderful composer, deep thinker, and a former clarinetist to boot. If you've heard his music, you're not surprised to hear that's why he favors our instrument.

Husa's piece was "Concerto for Winds and Percussion." (I know, informative but boring.) I played it many many moons ago in the Mass. Youth Wind Ensemble--it's one of those pieces you really need to spend a while getting to know. By the time we had worked on it enough to perform it we had gotten to the point where we understood it, but it took most of a year for us to get to that point.
