My colleague in the community orchestra put down his reliable plastic Vito clarinet this week and showed up at rehearsal with a Buffet.
The first thing I noticed was that his tone had a clear ringing sound. When I looked over, I noticed that his "Vito" was wearing a Buffet barrel! NOT, the whole thing was a well-broken-in R13.
I'm just blown away at the difference in sound between these two instruments.
I guess I'm over suggesting that anyone "settle" for a student-grade clarinet.

My wife played a Selmer Signet all the way through high school. When she started up again last year, after a 30 year break, she thought it would be okay to use that old thang. I just hooked her up to a tuner and she now plays a Buffet R-13 Festival.
I started playing clarinet this year and every time I think I sound great I just have her play and it really makes me want to woodshed more. She feels the same way when she listens to Eddie Daniels or Pete Fountain. :o)
