 Aux Eb lever on Concerto
Author: Morrigan
Date:   2005-11-15 11:28

More a thought than anything (that could lead to action...), how hard is it to have an aux. Eb lever added to a Leblanc Concerto? And no, I'm not gonna buy an Opus, hehe...

Dear Morrigan,

Perish the THOUGHT !!!!! Then I would have to take it off and bend the spoons on the left side of the horn and then my tech would have a heart attack.

What ever the difficulty, I recommend having the tool available! After years with a full Boehm and after going through any new pinky-dancing challenge and marking the fingerings for a conventional pinky-key set-up, the LH Eb/Ab lever still comes in handy.

I agree that the Eb/Ab aux. key is a handy thing. However, I'm not sure it's possible to add it to a Concerto. Contact someone like John Butler (a sponsor on the repair tech end) and ask what he thinks about such an endeavour.

A LH Eb can be added - though it will have to run on the outside like Buffet or Howarth clarinets, with an extra set of pillars and a lug fitted to the Ab/Eb key.

Another (and much simpler) way is have the Eb lever on the same pillars as the LH F/C lever, and the Ab/Eb touch in pretty much the same place as the LH low D key on bassets and basses, just below the F/C lever - and this can be done with NO drilling, alterations or extra pillars added to the clarinet itself as it works in a similar principle to oboe bell keys - the LH F/C touch and foot are seperated, the barrel hollowed out and pinned to a steel which the Ab/Eb key runs on without affecting the F/C key. I've just done this to my plastic Yamaha. There's also no need for an extra spring for the Ab/Eb lever, but a spring can be added to the top pillar if wanted.

Swap your clarinet with Kevin, he seems to have a Eb key for spare, don't know if you like the signature ;-)

Or stamp the Concerto logo on a Opus....

It was much easier if they put the key standard on every instrument... removing the key is easy, adding it....

Why is the Opus around £1000 more than the Concerto?

Dear Morrigan; When I sold my Selmer Signature I kept its aux lever because it is designed to be detached and it is mounted on the outside of the other two levers (better for the C# lever, if you ask me). In their design they did not allow the other end of the aux lever to rest on top of the Eb's padcup but underneath a tab on the side of the padcup. They go up in not exactly the same direction, you see. It cost $100. We must admit that there is a big break over the break, Ken
