I tried a new Buffet R-13 A clarinet the other day...was surprised by the (in my opinion) poor action, intonation, and un-even response for a "top-dollar" instrument. Will keep looking...

WJK,
I know you take(took) a few lessons with GBK, and so presume that you're in NY or closeby. You might want to try out Weiner Music (www.weinermusic.com) on Long Island. At Clarinet Day at Mannes College a few weeks back, they brought a selection of professional clarinets that had been setup by their tech (Mark) and there were a few REAL nice horns in there. I don't remember trying an A that I particularly liked, but I really liked the way one selmer signature Bb played and ESPECIALLY one R13 Vintage Bb they had.
And from what I hear, their prices ain't too bad either.

So you pick the best out of 15 clarinets.. and maybe someone else will like another of the 14 left. What ends up happening to all the rest if nobody likes the way they play? This is just one shop with 12-13 'bad' clarinets. Then you multiply that over all the other shops with as many R-13's and other models and brands. Maybe that is why they cost so much. So many sit around collecting dust.

I had a really hard time finding an R-13 A clarinet that I was happy with.
Infact I ended up just picking one up from weiner that I was wasn't impressed with but needed.
It wasn't until a year later, after I got my horn back from the brannens that I was amazed with it.
I had brought my A to several places to have adjustments and such done, but the brannens work.. I couldn't believe how amazing it was. It was so much easier to play neilsen and mozart, excerpts, everything was just much more enjoyable.
Id find something with reasonable intonation and sound then take it immediately to the brannens. They really are just amazing.
