 Books/literature on repairs
Author: C.Elizabeth07

I have several old student/intermediate model clarinets which I use for back up and the occasional busking adventure. I would like to learn to do basic repairs on my own horns, changing pads, bumper corks etc. I plan on using my older clarinets to practice repairs on, I'm not ballsy enough to begin dismembering my buffets...

Can anyone recommend any good books or something that can give me a start?

I believe that a book on this subject by Stephen Howard has recently been released on the Haynes publishing group.
Haven't seen it yet myself but if it as good his volume on the Saxophone then I think it should fit the bill.

There are more advanced tomes around aimed more at the professional level which were noted in a quite recent posting.

I don't know if Yamaha's most recent repair technicians manual is available to the public, but if you want to learn more in-depth stuff, contact them to see if it is.

If you want the basic disassembly/assembly order, most clarinets follow the same procedure, so familliarise yourself with the following sequence.

Top joint:

1. Speaker key
2. Side Eb/Bb key
3. Trill keys and side F# key together*
4. Throat G# key
5. Throat A key
6. LH 1 and 2 rings
7. Thumb ring
8. C#/G# key
9. LH3 Eb/Bb key*

* On Buffets and B&H clarinets, the side F# key can be removed before removing the trill keys, but best to remove them all at the same time. On Buffets, the LH3 Eb/Bb key can be removed before removing the C#/G# key as the screw head is on the upper pillar - on most clarinets the screw head is on the lower pillar and the C#/G# touchpiece is in the way, so that has to be removed before removing the LH3 Eb/Bb key.

Lower joint:

1. LH levers (all of them together)**
2. RH rings
3. B/F# 'sliver' key
4. RH F/C and Ab/Eb keys**
5. RH E/B key
6. RH F#/C# key
7. LH F/C lever

** On B&H clarinets you can remove/replace either of the LH levers independently, but still best to remove/replace both at the same time. On some Leblancs (LL, L27, etc.), the RH F/C and Ab/Eb keys are individually mounted, so the F/C key has to be removed before undoing the Ab/Eb key.

For assembly, replace the keys in the reverse order.

With regard to screws, keep the point screws in their respective pillars once the key has been removed so you don't get them mixed up or lost. With rod screws, place them in their respective key barrels when the keys are off so again they don't get mixed up or lost. If you're cleaning up the keys, then either replace them in the pillars on the joints for the meantime or make a screw board so they go in their relative positions in relation to where they are on the joints.

Elizabeth/Norman

I have the Haynes Clarinet Manual. As with all the Haynes Manuals, it is complete and well written. It has all the necessary information that both novice and experienced clarinetists could need to do basic clarinet maintenance.
