 Buffet E-13 clarinet
Author: Lisa

I am looking to buy an intermediate clarinet and am leaning toward the Buffet. They have the E-11, E-12, and E-13. Does anyone have an opinion on the relative value of the three? I've tried the E-11 and I have heard good things about it -- I'm wondering if it is worth it to go up to the E-12 or the E-13. Any input will be appreciated.

If your budget is limited you should also consider by a used professional clarinet such as an R-13. An E-13 is listed at $1282 by the Woodwind and Brasswind. This is near upper end for a used R-13.

I bought an E-13. I think it is beautiful, but I'm only learning. My teacher reckons that with a good mouthpiece and a replacement barrel, it is as good as an R-13 and only costs about two thirds the price.

I'll pass on my teacher's opinion of the E-11: he says that it is made in a different factory from the other Buffet wood clarinets and is nothing like as well made. My repairman who sold me my clarinet agrees. He says he would not sell me an E-11 because he can't recommend them.

Much like you, I've been searching for my next horn.
I lucked into a second hand E-13 (c. 1961) that needed pads and corks. My teacher has pointed out the tone quality as our primary aim in the search for instruments.

Well maintained, older horns should be more dimensionally stable and "settled" in tone than the newer issue.

Also, these were built when lumber choices offered better grade grenadilla blanks as raw materials.

They've posted a serial number index under "Equipment" here at sneezy.org that can help you determine the age of the horn in question.

I've played the R-13 and other modern horns at the local stores, which is the only way to really tell what you may like. My conclusion is to by a new Moenig barrel for my E-13 and spend money on charts.

If you have a teacher that you trust, who has no financial interest in buying and selling horns, they're the best source.

If you have a budget up to $1000, there are scads of choices. Try Dr. Fields at www.clarinetdoc.com, she's got good horns for people like us. I almost bought her 1960 R-13 before deciding to work with my E-13.

She's looking for a serious student to pass the horn on.

I bought an E-11 and I believe that it is the absolutely most gorgeous thing I have ever heard. I couldn't come across and E-12 or 13 to try, so I am not sure of the difference. If I continue to play, I'm going to get an RC Prestige, but that's off topic. The E-11 is made in Germany. I am not sure if the others are made in Buffet's home country of France. The best I can offer is to try as many instruments as you can and pick the one you like best that is within your budget. This may take awhile, but is well worth the effort.

The E11 is a clarinet made in Germany by the Schriber company owned by Boosey and Hawkes. A very nice student instrument.
The E12 is also made by the same company, were the wood is graded higher.
The E13 is an R13.. that didn't make the grase. Made in France, it is a great clarinet for the price if you have a selection.... go for the E13
