I play Clarinet and alto sax. For my clarinet I have 3 Ligs. Vandoren optimum, Rovner and a plain 2 band that came with the clarinet. For alto sax I have 4 ligs, Vandoren optimum, 2 different rovners and a plain 2 band lig that came with the sax. I just recieved a new mouthpiece for the clarinet. It is a Clark W. Fobes Nova. I have been trying to match it up with the proper reed. Now the problem. None of the clarinet ligs will fit. they are all to small. So I tried the Alto sax ligs. All except the 2 band alto lig are to big. The 2 band from the alto is the best fit, but not a good fit. Anyone out there using this mouthpiece? What lig are you using?

The Rovner usually fits most clarinet mouthpieces. Even both my gigliotti mouthpieces (notorious for being a "fat" mouthpiece.) Are you sure you opened up the Rovner enough? Another possibility is the Francois Louis ligature. That fits my MPCs. Also, you could easily try out a gigliotti ligature. They work very well IMO and are made to fit that "fat" mouthpiece (as well as thinner ones). And while you're at it, spend one dollar (literally) and get a package of velcro strips from your local office supply store. Wrap it around the mouthpiece slightly tight without a reed, place the reed, squeeze it over the reed, and give it a shot. It'll definitey fit, and I was pleasantly surprised (it's not my MAIN ligature, but it certainly worked well. And for some people on this board, it IS their main ligature.)

I have so many ligs that sometimes I can't remember whether a particular lig is for a clarinet or sax. You can use them interchangably. Maybe you'll want to try a sax lig on that clarinet mouthpiece?

I openned the rovner untill there was only one thred left and could not get the reed on. The alto ligs completely close without putting presser on the reed.

You can use the alto lig, but put a spacer or something inbetween the ligature and the mouthpiece. Example: put the reed on, slip over the alto ligature, and stick a folded up sheet of paper between the ligature and the reed. The ligature will then press against the paper, which is in turn pressing against the reed.
Doesn't have to be folded up piece of paper, could be anything (cloth, a washer, a bottlecap, a rock, etc. etc.) But this could easily solve the problem.
Another solution (if you're intent on having the cloth part of the LIGATURE press against the reed), is to place something around/on the BACK of the mouthpiece. A thick mouthpiece patch (or two), or anything that'll add to the depth in that direction.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. I used a piece of double back tape to put a strip of joint cork on the back of the mouthpiece and one of my Alto ligs fits great.

Just last night for a student playing a nova mp I put a Rue 56 Vandoren reed on it - there's no thicker reed out there.
It did fit.

After asking this question and receiving suggestions, I ordered a Ligaphone. I just recieved the Ligaphone ligature. A little tricky, on the first try, to get it to fit right. Then it seemed clumsy to use. After playing around with it for a few minutes I stumbled on the trick. It is one of the easyest ligs to use and it works just great for me. There was a noticable change in my sound, but it was to the good. Thanks to all for your suggestions.
