I am looking for a used wood clarinet for my daughter who has played for 6 years. She has a chance at a Selmer Signet 100 for about $400. Any input on if this is a good deal would be helpful.
What should we be looking for?

In my opinion, $400 is a little bit high for a Selmer Signet 100. Of course, I don't know the condition of this instrument (it might just be wonderful) and nor do I know the exact age. If you are buying it from a music store or repair person, it may come with a warranty or repair guaranty. On eBay, Selmer Signet 100's reularly sell for $125-225 depending upon condition, etc. Of course, one will pay more on a local purchase, where you can touch, feel & even play the item prior to purchase. The lack of the latter is discounted in some of these online auctions. AND, on the other hand, many people wind up with a plastic or resonite (hard rubber) clarinet for $400; a wood clarinet could be a stepup. Nothing wrong with renting too, until you gain some experience. We've all learned the hardway to some extent, just like anything else. Best of luck. mw
