used clarinet parts

I am a newbie here. I just picked up a cheap bundy clarinet. I play the flute and thought that i'd give the clarinet a try too. It appears to be in pretty good shape, except it is missing the barrel. Is there someplace i can pick up a cheap used one? I don't want to spend too much money in case i don't want to keep playing it. Also do i need to worry about sizing???

The current Selmer USA plastic barrels should work, but do you know if your Bundy is the wider bore 590 or narrow bore 577 (the number '577' should be stamped on the top joint)?

Well put - Chris - I'd suggest taking at least the upper joint to your {friendly?] repair-person, and asking to look in their junk box for a plastic barrel which fits, [or could be cork-modified for fit]. Then to adapt to a mouthpiece-fit is the next question. Luck, Don

In my neighborhood, repair techs often give away Bundy barrels. On a grumpy day they might charge you fifty cents

I have a couple of loose ones around here... if you can't find one near you. I've also used just about any ol' thing that fits, with satisfactory results. Personally, I love Bundys because they're tough and flexible and the intonation is pretty good.

I suppose the 590 is the nearest, cheaper alternative to a 'Centered Tone' - I know people tend to knock the old Bundys, but they were designed and played well considering the cost - my oboe teacher still has her Buescher version from the early '70s (with the 'stick-on' logo), and it's still in excellent shape, I replaced two tenon corks recently but other than that it's been well looked after and didn't need much doing to it.

I used to use a Buescher version with a Vandoren A1 crystal at school (which I borrowed when I was sorting out my B&H 2-20), as long as the padding is good and they're well regulated they would do the job.
