My community orchestra is playing a piece with a part for Eb clarinet. Since this is an extremely rare occasion, I can't see spending any significant cash on acquiring an Eb clarinet. One affordable option is the Woodwind and Brasswind house brand Eb. A student model, plastic. Has anyone had any experience with the WWBW house brand instruments? Any thoughts on whether the cheap WWBW clarinet would be adequate for my purposes if outfitted with a decent mouthpiece, reed and ligature? I played Eb years ago in high school/college band so I'm familiar with the unique challenges of the little beast.

With no disrespect intended towards my good friends at Woodwind/Brasswind, I'd rather you borrow one of my good e-flat clarinets than buy something that will probably not be any good (an e-flat clarinet is a difficult instrument to play, especially if it is a student instrument). If you'd like to contact me off-line, I'll be glad to arrange sending you a clarinet to borrow, equipped with a good mouthpiece too, if needed.

Also check out local public shcools. My high school recently lended its effer to a college for a performance. Just a thought though...

I own a Yamaha plastic eefer (they make one pro wood horn and one mid-grade plastic model). Fred Rast, local woodwind teacher and mouthpiece maker played both my plastic fantastic and his expensive Buffet horns for me- we both agreed the sound and response of each were very, very similar. Before this comparison, I was preparing to dump Yamaha on ebay and seek a Buffet or Selmer. Instead, I will spend the $$$ saved on lessons from Fred. One more demonstration of " it's not the horn, it's the player" that is most of the sound!

I recently bot a plastic Bundy Eb, and comparing it to my wood [pro overhauled] Noblet, found very little difference. Several cl teachers in our comm. band have also given it high marks ! What little Eb playing I've ever done has always required a lot of "flexibility" so as to NOT "fight" with the piccolos !! Don
