All-state/All-county auditions are coming up... and it's time to prepare those scales again. Since last year, I have started working out of the Baermann book and have come to the Ab scale. I can play the scale just fine in the pattern in the Baermann book, so my teacher recommended I learn it for auditions, three octaves. I am working on the third octave in all-state pattern, and I'm having issues with the arpeggio. You have to overblow the D#/Eb(I think) to get the Ab... but with the arpeggio going so fast in the pattern and even slowly, I can't get the note to "pop up". Do you have any suggestions to make it easier?

Assuming your arpeggio is the standard Ab, C, Eb, Ab, the first thing you have to decide is how you want to play the Eb. If you want to finger Eb as:
RT oxx xo)o Eb/Ab
then go to Ab by lifting all three fingers of your left hand and releasing the sliver, i.e., play:
RT ooo xoo Eb/Ab
That is the Ridenour's recommendation in his fingerings book. (And I see GBK beat me to the punch by posting it while I was composing this message.)
However, an alternative approach worth trying is to finger Eb
RT oxx oox Eb/Ab
from which, you can move up to a good Ab which, for some reason, Ridenour seems to have overlooked, (though his #21 is close) simply by lifting the middle finger on your left hand to:
RT oox oox Eb/Ab
Try that and tell us if it works on your clarinet.
Best regards,
jnk

Ridenour does list the Eb fingering:
TR oxx/oox Eb/Ab
It is his fingering #3 ...GBK

For the record,
I posted my correction (it was the Ab that Ridenour overlooked) BEFORE GBK caught me! (The time stamp on my final edit is 2:47. The time stamp on GBK's correction is 2:56.) Hah!
Best regards,
jnk
