 Leblanc 44
Author: Scott

I was given a new Leblanc 44 to review for my Brook Mays music store tonight. I'm still trying it out. Anyone have an opinion on the Leblanc 44?

Scott - Does it have a name, such as Concerto, Opus. Big Easy [Pete F's] or earlier, "L's", 7 to 2000?, LL, Symphonie, Dynamic, Classic etc. Most of us refer to their models by name, prob. not having brochures listing Model # as well as providing some info as to mfgr'g dating. I need help ! Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

The Leblanc 44 is apparently a new model. Brook-Mays had it in its catalog, but has removed it. Here's the Google cache link: http://72.14.207.104/search?q=cache:TDo-Wij7U_gJ:zeswitz.com/prod_disp.aspx%3Fitemnum%3D44%26prodcode%3Da1a3++%22Leblanc+44+%22+clarinet&hl=en%20target=nw

Leblanc advertising copy is known for its creativity but can be short on specifics. From the photo and price, it appears to be an "Opus II, Jr.," or perhaps a Concerto II, Jr., with the same profile and keywork.

I'd be interested in Scott's impressions, particularly in comparison with the top models.

I noticed that LeBlanc still has some "Value Instruments" listed on their web site. One could probably get an "Infinite" or "Ambiance" at about the same price if they could find a LeBlanc dealer interested enough to pursue them. I got my now two year old "Ambiance" (1193S) for less than $100 more than BMMB is asking for the 44. I contacted four "Big Name" mail order/discount houses and the only one that was willing to help me out was Lisa Argiris when she still owned IMS. I'm thinking about finding a dealer willing to help me out with a 1193S-A to match my Ambiance Bb. Aside from that, I to am interested in the model and will check it out at the Texas Bandmaster's Association meeting in San Antonio in July.

It looks like it is more like the Esprit with silver keys than any of the others in Leblanc's lineup. It might be its replacement. The Esprit was touted as being like the Concerto and Opus without the price tag. I play-tested and bought several Esprits alongside my personal Opus and didn't find the comparison to be true--yet found the Esprit to be an excellent choice for an advancing player due to Leblanc's exceptional intonation. Perhaps the 44 is an upgrade or modification.

Will be interested to hear.

The only other marking is on the price tag made up by the store. It's titled the Leblanc 44 French Pro. I'm really not that impressed with it. I haven't played a high end clarinet before so I don't have much to go on. It's nice looking but it doesn't have a full, wood sound. It sound almost identical to my 30 year old Vito Claritone. I was expecting a better, fuller sound.
