Can blowing make you *really* sick?
Author: igor

I've been so sick for almost 3 days but I don't really know what caused it.

I mean I felt lightheaded in the past after inflating too many balloons etc. but the feeling only lasted for a minute or so and it was very different.

Last week, I practiced for 2-3 hours a day with really long breaks.
I never had any symptoms *while* practicing. Then I just woke up one day with a horrible headache that wouldn't go away. What to compare it to?
High blood pressure? A migraine? I was even seeing flashing lights. etc.

Can blowing give you this? I heard that trumped players can even pass out while blowing a particularly high note... But clarinet? Maybe I was blowing too hard...

To sum it up, the first week of learning resulted in a hurt hand, terrible headache, and a head full of questions... Oh well. I even promised myself that I wouldn't touch the instrument till I find a teacher. It is day three and I am struggling not to break this promise <g>

igor,
You need to see a doctor instead of guessing.
Good luck,

Yes, I hear ya. No I am not going to ask theoretical questions here about numbers and ratios of pain<g>

I've almost recovered. By the time I see a doctor, I will be fine. I am just curious if blowing *could* cause this...

I've woken up with a horrible head ache as well one day, plus with a head ache I had muscle pains in my neck and I felt extremely cold.

I don't think it has anything to do with blowing, unless you're blowing your brains out hehe.

Prolonged stress and tension are my guess.

Thanks, it is an excellent observation! I was just wondering if it was one of the common problems, just like a sore thumb etc... Never mind then.

Actually, I've often woken up uneasy in the stomach or in the head, and playing clarinet for a while would help make me feel better.

Wow. To me, it's always the opposite. I'd sit on the couch, drink beer and watch tv and i'd feel fine. Then I'd start doing something for self improvement and that would kill me. Oh, that reminds me... I just started working on my 2002 "lose weight" resolution so I went running a few days ago early in the afternoon when it felt like 120F with 100% humidity.
I wonder if headache is a common symptom if you are running in the deadly heat, and blowing clarinet simultaneously.

You could be dehydrated or possibly have a brain tumor or bacterial meningitis or you forgot to drink coffee that day. Drink lots of water, If it doesn't go away call a doctor.

I hate doctors. I rely on this message board only! ...OK, brain tumor, bacterial meningitis, what else? Thank you people, I am recovering minute after minute!

When trumpet players get light-headed from blowing too hard, what is happening is that they are flexing the muscles in their neck so hard that they constrict blood flow to the brain. Their brain is deprived of oxygen, and stops working properly, making the player see spots and feel really dizzy. As an interesting sidenote, I have a lead trumpet friend who was goofing around in jazz band one day and taking stuff up an octave or three. Normally our director yells at him for this, but he said "I want him to learn a lesson the hard way," and did nothing. Not two minutes later I hear a WHAM behind me, and look back to see that our high-note-happy trumpet player passed out. He was uninjured, but his nice Bach trumpet was pretty seriously messed up from him falling on it. I still harrass him about it today. Basically, the moral is that if you play so high you get dizzy and lightheaded it will go away in less than a minute. This sounds like something else, and while it might be something serious like a tumor or meningitis, it could just be stress or allergies as well.

There are lots of different triggers for headaches and it sounds as though you need medical attention. Even if, for some strange reason, clarinet playing were a trigger, that's not supposed to happen to your body. You really should check it out. We're not doctors, we just play one on this board...

I have developed migraines during the past year and in certain playing situations, a developing one can be exacerbated. It almost seems pitch related in my case, as though certain vibrations set things off. But it's still a migraine, and needs to be treated as such. IMOP.

You could be using a reed which is way too hard and having to "blow your brains out".

Don't play till getting a teacher and have a Doctor check you out. It could be playing related, or not.

Oh, no, no, you are just being modest! When an incident happens, there is always a doctor in the crowd, so to say. I was diagnosed with brain tumor and meningitis on this board, and it was absolutely free of charge! Imagine how much that would cost me if I had to deal with a real doctor. Plus I just recalled that a relative stayed with us over the weekend and we were toasting till 3am so I got slightly out of tune... like maybe 10 cents flat.. that might have contributed too. Thank you all, kind people! I feel great tonight!
Good night!

Just another possibility:

Even though I was an accomplished flute player, when I started doubling on clarinet it gave me sinus trouble. I guess that had something to do with high air pressure with a lot less air 'throughput', and would have been worse still on an oboe.

Sinus trouble is often associated with headaches.

I don't have the problem now. Perhaps the body takes a while to get used to abnormal combinations of air flow and air pressure.

Most people underestimate dehydration. I used to drink less than 1 litre a day, and the bit I drank was often just some juice or cola. Five years ago I got a bad migraine that lasted for several months. The doctor only gave me pills to make my blood pressure rise which was extremely flat (90/50). Though I am no friend of taking any medicine I thought about what could make my blood pressure rise in a natural way. Then I recovered I was drinking much too less and started drinking 2 litres of water each day.

In the beginning you need a strong discipline to do that, but now I get used to it and feel thirsty when I don't drink enough. My blood pressure has risen up to 120/70 and I feel fine. Only when I don't drink enough for a couple of days (f.e. in holidays) my blood pressure falls and the headache comes back.

You also have to know that caffeine and alcohol dehydrates you extremely. So by drinking a cup of coffee and a glass of water together you are still at zero with your water household.

But when the headache still is there after having tried all good advices on this board, I agree with the others that you should see a doctor. My stepmother was diagnosed with brain tumors last year and this year she is already inable to move or speak and waits for her death. Your wellness is the most precious treasure you have!

Caffeine may be dehydrating, but it actually HELPS most headaches that aren't caused by an underlying issue. In fact, caffeine therapy (fancy term for 3-5 servings a day) is often recommended for individuals who are too sensitive to commonly prescribed medications (nausea being the most common side effect).

I love how people on this board go "OMG YOU HAVE TO SEE A DOCTOR RIGHT NOW!!!" when someone complains of a slightly sore thumb, one single headache, etc. If they're recurring and debilitating, that's one thing. Otherwise, take some Excedrin (TM) and read a book.

I figure if they're writing here then it's more than what anyone would consider "normal", so the only response that seems appropriate is "ask someone who can see you and knows".
