 Tuner Question
Author: Scott
Date:   2005-06-10 19:57

I purchased a S-Series Metro Tuner. When I have it sound an A - my clarinet matches it with B. Everything I play is one not higher on the clarinet to match the tone. It's a "guitar" tuner - does this make a difference? It shows pitch at 440 Hz and the note is 4D. I have to play an E to match the tone. Help!

OK, Scott --

I think you are probably playing a "Bb Clarinet", am I right?

The Bb clarinet is what is called a "transposing" instrument. That means, functionally, that when you play your "C", it is what a non-transposing instrument (like a piano or guitar or flute or oboe) sounds as a Bb.

Therefore, when your tuner sounds an "A", the corresponding Bb clarinet note would be a "B". But if you play *your* "A", the tuner is going to show a "G".

Every note on the Bb clarinet is one whole step below the comparable note on a C (non-transposing) instrument.

So when your director asks you to play a "Concert Bb scale," clarinets and trumpets start on their C. Flutes, oboes, trombones, bassoons, etc., start on their Bb. (It's the one place in band music where the Bb instruments get a break!)

Good luck. Search on this site for more information on tuning and transposition -- there have been several discussions.

Susan

You can get other tuners that would work better for wind instruments. They are not expensive. Check your music store or go on line to a reputable catalogue.

It takes guts to ask!

The Korg CA-30 is the successor to the Korg CA-20.

It is still the best $19.99 tuner (WW/BW) on the market ...GBK

No, you're not illiterate Scott. They didn't bother to teach us that stuff years ago. Your tuner is OK.
