Cracking in the UK

For those who play wood clarinets: is there a marked difference in the amount of cracking of clarinets experienced in the UK (where the humidity and temperature changes are fairly minimal) compared to other places in the world where there are more significant changes?

The weather in the UK could perhaps best be described as 'cold and damp,' with periods of 'not as cold or as damp' followed by the occasional month where there is no rain and we suddenly have an official drought, or half a centimeter of snow during which the whole country comes to a standstill.

Bearing this in mind, if care is taken with not leaving instruments in cars, not playing very cold instruments etc, is it reasonable to expect that the majority of wooden clarinets would be quite happy setting up home here?

A certain percentage of clarinets are predisposed to crack, no matter what precautions you take or what the temperature/humidity climate.

Minimize the risks by taking prudent measures of care and maintenance.

If your clarinet cracks, get it fixed as soon as possible.

Otherwise, don't lose any sleep worrying about it...GBK

Don't forget the floods! These make it very difficult for councils to monitor the hosepipe bans! ;-)

We came to work in North Italy a few years ago and the weather is probably the worst you can find for anything wooden. Freezing cold one day, hot the next, air suddenly becoming so humid you can almost wring the water out.
So far, no problems.

I will stop stressing and get on with it!

As clarinets seem to have minds of their own half the time, I shall try talking nicely, like with plants.

I wonder of any one has studied clarinets as a sentient life form.......
