What makes you play LOUD?
What makes you play soft?
What do you do different, if anything, when you play loud or play soft?

Thank you for asking this question! I have wanted to ask people about this for a long time but have never gotten around to it. It seems so simple, but I do NOT have an answer for you...
Consider this post an ECHO of your question!

When I play loud, I blow harder than when I play soft; that is, I expel air quicker. Presumably (I never measured it) the reed vibrates with a larger amplitude. I need to tighten my embochure to maintain pitch and focus. Tonguing takes greater effort. Needless to say, playing loud and keep control as well as when I play soft takes great physical effort.
I infer from the above that, when I play loud, the reed is forced farther (I never measured it) from the mouthpiece (not closer, as would be expected from the venturi effect). The extra force of the embochure and tongue are needed to counteract this.
