The Sacto event is huge and complex - it can be difficult to plan a single day that encompasses your favorites. A hint for those who want to strategize in advance: the Sacramento Bee publishes the performance schedule in the Friday edition, which now has an online version.
I am wistfully looking forward to this, since it will probably be my last before moving out of the area. Groups I never miss: Howard Alden's allstar group, which includes the great Harry Allen on tenor; the Reynolds Bros. Rhythm Rascals, a very non-dixie, highly entertaining combo with great period repertoire, a bit on the novelty side; anything with Becky Kilgore, the reigning queen of early jazz vocal style; anything with Hal Smith, the most imaginative early-jazz drummer you'll ever see; the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra, a 10 piece group working from authentic old arrangements.

Drat I'll miss the whole thing this year though many musicians I know will be playing. I'm going to Colorado Springs to attend my brother's retirement from the Air Force Academy Band. He's traveled the world over, plays a big bari sax and all other reeds.

I'm headed up there. We just saw the Mugsy Remembered Group from England and they were pretty fun.
