I recently got my hands on an old Rene Duval Woodwinds B flat Clarinet. Does anyone know anything about the history of the company or anything about the quality of the clarinets?
Thanks,
C

Low-priced 'stencil' clarinets made by some anonymous French or Italian shop and marketed in the US under the Rene Duval name, circa 1940s or 50s, I think. I'm not sure about all this, but it's my best guess from working on a few of these.

Thanks David.
What do you mean by "stencil"?
I'm kind of thrilled to have it because my last name is Duval.

"Stencil" instruments are those made by one manufacturer, but are marketed/distributed/sold by another company/store/importer who 'stencil' their own name on the instruments.
As an example, the French Robert Malerne company made bass and alto clarinets which were sold under literally a dozen or more other names including Conn, King, Linton, Evette & Schaeffer, Lyon & Healy, Marigaux, Penzel-Mueller, etc. etc. (as well as under their own).

I have a Rene Duval alto saxophone. It actually plays well with a non-original neck of unknown manufacture. The keywork's a bit soft, but it seems to play in tune with a clear, bright tone. All it has to identify itself is that it's made in Italy.

I got my Rene Duval clarinet yesterday. The seller on ebay had told me it was plastic, but it is indeed wood and it is in remarkable condition. I was able to play all the notes and it has a very mellow tone.
I'm taking it to Eric Satterlee tomorrow to have him take a look at it and probably refurb it.
Thanks for the info everyone.

P.S. It does say "made in italy" on it.
