 Gettin used to an Eefer

Or the effer, as I like to call it.

I currently use 3.5 Vandoren reeds. I'm wondering if I should move up to 4s? I use 4s on my Bb clarinet.

Main problem I have been having is with notes above D (above the staff). It could be that I am too afraid to play them, but sometimes they come out as a big squack or nothing at all. Would harder reeds help with that?

i used vandoren 3's , and they worked totally fine for me, didn't have problems reaching the high notes (up to high g; altimisso)

Also, try to hear the note before you play it. If you know what you want it to sound like then that might cut through the fear of playing a squeak. Let us know how you make out!

I can't really give you advice on that, given that I don't know what m/p you're using.

My own setup is a Vandoren B40 m/p with a Bonade reverse lig and #3.5 Vandorens, if that helps.

Yup, that's my set-up. But my bonade isn't reversed.

sounds to me like it could be that the reeds you are using are too hard.

I play the Eb at school every once and awhile. I use V12 3 1/2's, the clarinet is a Leblanc Espirit, and I use a Selmer mouthpiece with a standard metal ligature.

For me, it feels like the embouchure has to be even tighter on the Eb than on the Bb. It took me awhile to play to G, but now I can even hit the 5th octave C. You may just need to tighten your embouchure some. But, I do know that on the Bb, I had to move up to stronger reeds so I could hit above 4th octave G on the clarinet. You could go ahead and try it and see how it works I guess! I'm not too experienced with the eefer, so don't take my advice for more than it's worth-which it's worth very little!

Yea,I can't have my embouchure too tight, actually. My main problem is the higher altissimo range. After playing for about an hour, I can get them out no problem. But, by then, I have a hole in my bottom lip. So I have started using paper for my bottom teeth again. (I used to do it for Bb, but I stopped for a looong time. Now I think I need to go back to using it.)

Anyway, the paper kinda helps, cuz if I do need to bite down a lil more, it doesn't hurt so bad. But it sometimes doesn't help with the whole altissimo thing.

Woo...
