I was practicing tonight and like I mentioned before, I can't count worth poo either. But I haven't played in a couple days and I could get the rhythms down really well tonight. This happens to me a lot it seems. It's like I get played out, then when I take a few days off, I can come back and play better.
Does this happen to anyone? You just get played out, feel really bad cuz you suck, stop playing for about a week, then you can play everything awesome when you start practicing again?
Weird.

I think that, as you get better and better, you suffer from inconsistency. A colleague who has the HS bands in our town complains about the inconsistencies of his groups --never knows what to expect when a performance comes up.
I'm under the impression that consistency comes with overall competence. As we get better, we expect to be better all the time and can be dissapointed when we have an off-day.
I think a week between attempts is too long, though. Bite it and pick up the horn later on the bad dayp; and, if its still unbearable, put the horn away over night.

I don't know if a week off is the best approach, but every once in a while I decide my tone sounds crappy compared to usual. I give my mouthpiece a good cleaning, using cuetips and water. I also clean out the tone holes in my horn. But the point is after I take one or ...t w o.... days off and come back, everything is better.
You can't let off-days throw off your practice.
My teacher tells me that when I sound good, I should practice a lot. When I don't sound good, she tells me to take a break.
Just my ideas
good luck
