Hi,
I would like to know if any of you have an opinion on pads, i.e. types and or brands. I have a Noblet from the 1960’s and am very fond of it. However it is time to over-hall it and I really would like to give this horn the very best possible parts available. Thank you for your comments… -=[Joe Vacc]=-

Personally, i like the Gotex pads on my festival because they are don't need to be repaced so much but on the contrary-you get 'water in da holes' more frequently, because the pads are water-resistant. Hope I could help!

If you go with traditional fishskin bladder pads, I'd recommend buying the double-skin type and avoiding the cheapest, single-skin pads, which I think are a false economy. My mother used to ask the technician to use the cheapies when I was a young student, forty years ago, but, IMHO, the double-skin pads last considerably longer and seal better, for very little difference in price. I now do my own re-padding with the double-skin pads from Ferree's Tools, http://www.ferreestools.com.

I would give more consideration to the technician. Make sure he/she is experienced with woodwinds (check around with musician friends, a teacher, etc. if you can). A reputable one will recommend using good materials; most likely, as Lelia says, the double skin type pads. They're very dependable.
Gortex, Le Jeure etc., while a bit more durable (and expensive), are harder to seat correctly, they're very *exacting*, and a little more 'sensitive' than the good ol' standard double skin pads. It depends on whether you want to spend the extra few bucks.
You have a good instrument and in the hands of a good tech your horn will be in fine shape many years from now.

Joe, the Straubinger (I think that is the correct speling) pads are a fairly new "state-of-the-art" pad but they are quite expensive. Many people think they are the cadilac of pads. Like the above posts, the double-skinned pads are much better than the single-skin ones. I prefer the Buffet pads, but there are others that are quite good.
