does your thumb have to go under the metal thing that sticks out in the back? cause i'm smaller, (14 and 4'7! wooo!) and it's just not working. i'm probably holding it wrong. which hand goes on top?

Left hand on top and right hand on bottom. Your right thumb goes under the metally thing (known as a thumb rest). The clarinet will rest on the upper 1/3 of your thumb (towards the nail instead of the palm). Maybe you should buy a beginner book and look through it for hand position, fingering charts, embouchure, etc. That would help you a lot. Also, any GOOD band teacher can help a beginner with a beginner's problem. If you are learning the clarinet by yourself, you might want to get a clarinet teacher. Hope I can help!
