Professor Kim Cole Luevano of EMU organized this event.
There were Exhibits by Meridian, Buffet-Crampon, and others.
Registration for the entire event was $5 (!!!). I sure don’t know how Professor Cole covered expenses, but her stated intention was to make it both valuable to and affordable by students, and to that end it was a tremendous success. However, she said that the price might go up next year. I think we can afford it.
From what I saw, most of the attendees were from the clarinet program at EMU, but there were also a fair number of outsiders such as myself. I recognized a number of people who had attended Karl Leister’s events several weeks previously, down the road at the University of Michigan.
I missed the performance anxiety presentation because of other commitments. Reports that I got all indicated that the presentation was very valuable. I also missed the beginning of Prof. Mandat’s master class while I got a sandwich, after spending the entire lunch period in the exhibits.
Both clinicians were very positive in their approach, and did a really good job putting the students at ease. It is always amazing to watch really good people teach, and especially when you hear real improvement in so very short amount of time. The students represented the typical range of what you would expect of college level players. In terms of difficulty, the pieces they played ranged from Brahms to the cadenza of the Copeland concerto, if that gives you some idea.
Eric Satterlee’s repair clinic was sort of like "The Cooking Channel meets The Clarinet" - live repairs, very well presented, and with humor. The intention was to de-mystify what a technician does. He covered the repairs that everyone will need to do sooner or later: A/Ab screw adjustment, bridge key adjustment, crows foot adjustment, and how to put on a tenon cork. Then he talked about cracks and why they occur, and did the first part of patching a crack in an R-13 upper joint. These were all done live while we watched. We were all somewhat aghast when Mr. Satterlee demonstrated by intentionally bending and re-straightening the crows foot on a new R-13 Buffet that he had borrowed from the manufacturer's exhibit. Then, to make sure we understood the technique, he bent the key and straightened it again!
Prof. Cole Luevano ran a tight ship in terms of pacing. Without feeling rushed, the events started and finished on time, and there was always time for questions from the audience.
All in all, this was a pretty wonderful little event. Prof. Cole Luevano’s intent is to do this every year, and I hope it continues.

Thanks for the report. This would be close enough for me to travel to...if I could justify spending a weekend in Ypsilanti. EMU is one of the Mid-American Conference schools with outstanding music programs...including Ball State, Western and Central Michigan, Bowling Green and Northern Illinois (I'm sure there are others, too).

Ypsi has some things to offer, and so does Ann Arbor, and there are also Detroit and Toledo, which have much more, both within an hour or so by car.
If you are interested in next year's event, which should be about this same time of the year, you can get Prof. Cole Luevano's contact information from their website: "www.emich.edu"

Thanks. I'll check that out. I was looking at Eastern for college, but I got into Central, which was my first choice.

Eric Satterlee is awesome isn't he? He's a personal friend of mine and the only person to ever touch my Buffet besides me.
I had planned on going to Clarinet Days but family took precedence.

clarispark...
I went to CMU. Dr. James Batcheller is very nice (directs the marching band..he was in marching band when I was there) and Mr. Williamson is a wonderful conductor. I think you will like it there. (I was just there for the alumni band and the new music building is state of the art! I was in Powers...lol...very old building.)

Ralph -
Thanks for the report, but I didn't see anything about the emu. Did it get quarantined, and if so, coldn't they have substituted an ostrich?
[It's still April, even if not April 1.]

Eric Satterlee was doing repairs on the spot for people, and I didn't see any money change hands. This were mainly the repairs mentioned above, key height adjustments, and minor leak repairs.
His business cards are really wonderful, as they are printed on very thin sheet cork. He said that people regularly call him for new cards when the old ones have been used up for instant repairs.
And ACTUALLY Eastern Michigan University teams are the "Eagles". Not a flightless bird in sight.
