 Greg Smith Barrels

I'm wanting to know if Greg Smith's barrels have rings or not. I've already tried to e-mail him about this, but his wife responded that he is in Europe for the week, so I thought I would ask here. Thanks.

Far as I know, he sells Chadash barrels, which look like stock Buffet barrels but have "CHADASH" engraved below the Buffet logo. So yes, they have rings.

Greg Smith sells Chadash barrels that he selects to match his custom made mouthpieces. As the are basically Buffet barrels (with rings) customized by Guy and inscribed with his logo.

FYI -- 2 things you should know: As above, Greg generally sells the barrels only with his mouthpieces. He isn't in the business of reselling clarinet accessories.

Second, if you are asking because you are interested in a Chadash barrel without rings, Guy is making them that way now. Just contact him through his website as listed above.

Mark,

Is that the only way they're made now? I may be interested in one someday, but I prefer the ringed type.

Ralph,

I'm sure that if you asked politely, Guy Chadash would make one with rings. But just check it out with him.

You can get the Chadash barrel with rings from almost any music store like WW&BW for example.

Chadash barreles without rings? How interesting it is! Have anyone tried these barrels??

I have never tried barrels without rings so far (Maybe, I will try someday...). I play barrels with rings.

I play Chadash, by the way. I think that rings on barrels make more clarity in the sound and provide better focus. This is why I find the Chadash barrels (with rings), which I am playing now, work very well. I am interested how the Chadash barrels without ring works.

"I have never tried barrels without rings so far"

"I think that rings on barrels make more clarity in the sound and provide better focus"

Hmm.... How can you say that if you haven't tried barrels without rings?

I don't really understand how rings would do that. When I play with my wooden Eaton or Buffet barrels (both with rings) the clarity of the sound and the focus is the same as when I play with my Scott barrel (derlin without rings).

When I use wooden barrels I will only use ones with rings, but for a very different reason. I think the rings help against cracking.

Thanks.

Greg will only sell a barrel with the purchase of a matching mouthpiece. So, plan to spend the money for both. However, both are quite worth the money. I have a Grenadilla wood Kaspar from Greg that I also got the Chadash barrel and they're very nice together. He's also great to work with.

Actually, I have Chedeville and Chicago Kaspar, which Greg made for me. I play these mouthpieces with Chadash barrels. I have barrels in different lenghth so that I can switch accordingly.....intonation.......

Greg Smith mouthpiece with Chadash barrels.......Nice combination........this is why I have never played barrels without rings. Simply, I did not have to try other barrels since I was satisfied with them.

I actually have synthetic barrels such as Scott barrels. I meant to use them for Opera performance which take a huge amount of time for rehearsal and concerts. I tried them, but I finally decided to play wooden barrels. This is my choice....

Maybe, I was so stupid..... I might have sensed that barrels with rings are better in any way..........no, I did not mean it. I simply admired the Chadash barrels sounding with nice focus and clarity.

I will be careful with my language and will certainly make a comment based on my objection from the fact I ACTUALLY played.

Thanks.

The Chadash barrels without rings are terrific. I actually find that they ring (pardon the pun) a little more. Maybe it can resonate more freely - I'm not sure. It could also just be the wood since every piece is different. At any rate, I've got 3 of them, and they play very well. Having just come through a pretty bad winter in terms of climate changes, and making trips to high altitude/low humidity places, I don't think the rings make a lick of difference where cracking is concerned. If the rings are tight enough to actually keep the wood from splitting, you run the risk of causing other problems including warping or cracking the bore if the barrel swells.

At any rate, they are terrific, and if you have a chance to try one, have fun.

Rings?
Chadash barrels have rings.

Walt Grabner. No rings
Clarinetconcepts (me). No rings unless requested
Pyne no rings
Bay no rings
Springer no rings
DeLutis Weber. rings
Backun barrels have wider wooden rings (look like spools)

Some feel that rings retard sound. Others don't. Effect is likely minor.

Lots to choose from. Biggest factor is the acoustical match for the mouthpiece, the instrument, and (surprise) the player.

Seems in all the above posts, Clark Fobes' bbls haven't been mentioned.

Clark has made ringless bbls for several years, both grenadilla and Rosewood.

His Bb bbl has 3 tapers: 1 on top and 2 on bottom, while his A bbl is a straight taper.
I own several Rosewood (lighter sounding). Others have tried mine and purchased bbls.
One local retired Sym player commented that the Rosewwod bbl gave him a new (better) sounding clarinet (more focused, open, better intervals).
Previously he used Backun; which replaced the stock Bb bbls.
If you haven't already, you may also considering trying one of Clark's mps; noteably the CF+ on his new Zinner blank

Ralph Morgan also custom makes barrels on request.

His barrels are made from his personal stash of aged grenadilla wood and do not have rings ...GBK
