 Boulez´ birthday
Author: Markus Wenninger

I don´t know whether it mattered to the members of this board, but the great P. Boulez had his 80ieth birthday lately, quite an occasion for me, a very nice one actually, after the regrettable death of Berio 2 yrs ago. You might remember that he composed such epochal works as "domaines" and "dialogue de l´ombre double" for our instrument. ...I felt like a teenager gaping at his idol when I watched him saying during an interview "I´m not the least interested in things of the past, all I ever did was to push onward", and this at the age of 80, after having changed musical history several times...get ´em Pierre!!

Time for all clarinet players to get out "Domaines" and start practicing it.

Maybe we could assemble as many clarinetists as possible and do it en masse at Shea Stadium someday..

could you imagine 4 thousand clarinetists doing Domaines...could be fun!

oh what an idea!!! - considering the different options of how to find one´s way through the score´s pages,it´d be a hell of a concert...though I fear the distinguished French master will just perhaps wrinkle his forehead in indignation about this...after second thought, it´d have some nauseating sort of suzuki-school-/ army-thingy to it...
Although, ensembles consisting of the same instrument offer fascinating possibilities, I´d love to play in a 4tett of as, or the trios our ensemble comes up with, like 2 scl(B) + ss are most intriguing. And Sciarrino did a great piece for sax4tett and 100 (sampled) saxofones, called "la bocca,,i piedi, il suono", a wonderful, great work of art.

I saw Boulez conduct for the first time a month ago, when our symphonic band went to Chicago and many of us bought Symphony tickets. I had never been to a symphony before, and loved it!

Boulez is my favorite conductor. I think he has someting jazzy in his touch.
I heard Domaines (played by Michel Portal) for the first time a few weeks ago and it is a great piece. About a week ago I also heard Domaines two clarinet solo version, and it is also great.

And Frank Cohen's Cleveland Orch. recording of the Debussy Rhapsodie, with Boulez conducting, is simply the best! Boulez is such a perfectionist that the Cleveland Orchestra people, I'm told, used to nickname him "The French Correction.!"

I also have a CD of some pieces of Stravinsky played by players from the Cleveland orchestra and conducted by Boulez and it is just great. My favorite version of Soldier's Tale is on that CD.

David Dow, who played the version of Domaines for two clarinets (without an orchestra by the way, if anyone was wondering, just two clarinets) you heard?
