I want to start a clarinet festival... help!
Author: samacro

I am the president of my college's clarinet club. We hope to start an annual one-day clarinet festival next fall. The purpose being to recruit local high school clarinetists. Does anyone have any experience organizing this type of thing? Do you have any pointers?

So far we have brainstormed a few ideas:

1) Bring in a guest artist to give a concert and a masterclass.
2) Give a concert featuring the students from our school.
3) Have a festival clarinet choir... rehearse once in morning, once in afternoon, perform at night?
4) Have our school's repairman give a lecture on basic repair techniques.
5) Bring in local music stores to show off instruments and supplies.

Do you have any others? Any funding suggestions? Anything else?

I am anxious to hear from you!

We just had one here in Melbourne - perhaps their website will give you an idea.

Hope that helps!

If you possibly can, get Howard Klug of Indiana for it. I can't think of a better day clinician than him - and I've been to a lot of them.

We have annual Festivals, [symposia] at Okla U, Norman, in June, 2-3 days, excellent!! Dr David Etheridge could likely give you some pointers. I'm sure you can look him up, if not MW [BB] and others, and I can help. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

We are doing something similar to what you describe next week. Here is a link if you want to pick some ideas off of it:

Email me if you'd like more details about how we pulled it together in terms of funding, lecturers, exhibits, etc. Two pieces of advice -- (1) Get the local clarinet teachers involved. Without them, you will have a hard time getting the students. (2) Get at least one lecturer of some stature that serves as your publicity hook to get people to come. A little celebrity (within clarinet circles anyway) goes a long way.

Good luck with it.
