I just got my R-13 back from John Butler a couple of days ago and the cork pad overhaul he did really passed the acid test last night with a marathon chamber orchestra rehearsal. What a difference! Gone is the noisy keywork that lately was making me stumble over fast passages. Now it's quiet and fast. And as a bonus, he buffed my keys to a mirror shine. I keep them as pretty shiny to begin with, but now my clarinet looks like it belongs in the Buffet showroom.
And talk about doing a quick turnaround! Maybe I caught him at an off-peak time, but from my front door to his and back took just over a week -- so fast, in fact, the horn came back to me even before I had a chance to pay the man.
Friendly service, too -- he answered all my questions, and when I had a minor issue with one of the new pads, he offered suggestions to remedy it myself (which appear to have worked) and of course offered to take my clarinet back into his shop. I remember one user recently saying s/he got quality workmanship but somewhat brusque treatment from his shop. I must say that's not the John Butler I encountered. He was friendly and courteous from the word go.
Kids, send your instruments off to Mr. Butler with confidence. They (and you) will be treated well.

At one time John had a Selmer BT for sale on Woodwind.org classifieds. Besides some reconstructive work depicted in the add it looked very clean. At the time, I seriously considered giving him a jingle. v/r Ken

John Butler has overhauled my three [so far] classic Selmer & Le Blanc Clarinets. He took a horn over 63 years old and made it look & sound amazing! His workmanship is superb and he's a very friendly guy, so easy to work with. As soon as I find another classic horn it will be shipped to Sugar Land in a heartbeat, John is that good!
