 TOPS - a review

I attended a concert yesterday (Sunday afternoon where I live) of an orchestra going by the rather odd acronymic name "TOPS" (the occasional performing sinfonia). Holst the Planets (Mars Venus and Jupiter), plus Peter Sculthorpe's Kakadu (which had its world premiere in Aspen) plus a couple of contemporary Australian compositions.

I must say, attending "community orchestra" concerts is always risky, they can (too often) be under rehearsed and of poor standard. Not so this ensemble. The clarinet section was enormous including a contrabass (7 players in all), there was a hecklephone and contrabassoon plus the usual assortment of hardware you expect to find in a community orchestra.

They've been around for 10 years, according to their brochure and their ranks are almost entirely made up of teachers and pit musicians. Next concert (Sydney Town Hall) will be Mahler's Ressurection Symphony. The playing was of such a high standard that I would recommend anyone attend or join this group. They rehearse in North Sydney Girls' High School auditorium and also perform at Macquarie University's main auditorium.

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.
