The Tube vs. Solid State Question
Author: wjk
Date:   2005-02-22 02:54

Would it be preferable to amplify a clarinet through a tube or a solid state amplifier? Would one use a tube or a solid state microphone? Lets assume we don't want any high-gain, guitar-type distortion. Thanks!

Tube, I believe. I don't see many solid state amps. And as long as it's on clean, it shouldn't get any distortion.

Disclaimer: I'm not sure.

If you run over to your local Guitar Center I think you'll see mostly solid-state amps. Tube amps command a premium just becausde they're tube amps and are more expensive to build to boot (due to transformers, etc., being required).

However, as to which is better - I don't think there's any real data on that. Why not rent & try? Go to your local "rock shop" and talk to the sound reinforcement people and see what you can rent. Most of those people are very practical in what they'll recommend to you.
