What is a sexaphone? Listening to the radio...
Author: Zannah

I was listening to the classical station and heard Debussy's Sexaphone Rhapsody, "a rare instrument". I had just woken up but I think I heard correctly. It was beautiful, sounded like a bassoon/euphonium and a little like a sax in the upper register. I loved it, so pretty! Am I losing it or does this instrument exist!? I want to find a recording... TIA

I may be mistaken, but I think it's just a slang way of saying "Saxaphone."

Yes, the Debussy "Rhapsodie" for saxophone is a standard of the sax repetoire. The announcer could have had an accent or been very tired and not pronounced the instrument correctly. If he was reading from the composer's or publishers original notes, then the saxophone was relatively new as far as instrumnents go.

It may have been a (sorta lame) joke. The sax has a reputation as a "sexy sounding" instrument. There's even a type of pop music that sax players sarcastically call, "bedroom sax" (mushy, slow music -- elevator music, really).

Hello Zannah,

May be your instrument could be a sousaphone ?
Here is a link with a photography :

I don't know how it sounds, and wonder whether it could sounds like a sax or a bassoon, but through the radio, instruments are some times difficult to recognise.

Hope this help you

Denis

Denis,
Some one in my band plays a sousaphone- it is similar to a tuba with a very low , low sound. I don't think that was it (I don't think it plays very high)
