I just heard on the news that the Swedish (American) conductor Sixten Ehrling died earlier today at his home in New York at age 86.
The last time I played with him he also accompanied his wife on the piano in a Mozart aria. He was a great joker. He proudly stated that he gave up drinking five years before and smoking three year before. He also said that he still had the habit of looking for beautiful women but that he had forgotten why!?
He conducted “The rite of spring” the first time I played it. The same occasion was his 50th performance of the piece. He “flattered” me at the last page of the Eb clarinet part by saying I was too loud. I took it as a compliment, I had no idea I could play that loud.
I have many memories form working with him. He had a difficult personality and he could get very sarcastic (and funny) when things didn’t go his way but he could also be very generous and happy when he was satisfied with a concert or performance.
May he rest in peace.
