Do we by any chance have any recording experts contributing to the board at present?
I'm looking for advice on equipment to setup a small mobile recording studio, to enable me to record live demos for various chamber groups that I'm working with, without having to pay for countless sessions in recording studios for many different groups.
I currently own a Sony portable Minidisc recorder and the standard Sony mic usually recommended by hi-fi shops to use with Minidisc, but get very limited results from it.
I own a high powered laptop, so perhaps this could be a computer based project?
I'm a total recording equipment novice, so any advice is very welcome.

In simplest form (no mixing):
Marantz PMD670 (get a 4Gb compact flash card)
Shure VP88 stereo microphone
Etymotic ER-4P headphones
You'll need a steady boom for the microphone, too.
I'm a fan of the dedicated Marantz recorder, but the software cannot be updated. http://www.sonicsense.com offers LapTop based recording gear and appropriate software.
