I'm working on Sonate op. 167 by Saint-Saens, the first movement and I had a quick question for advice. There are many spots where it is supposed to be piano, for example the beginning, all throughout the piece where it starts on a throat tone. Do you have any suggestions for having a full tone on those notes without the volume? I sound a little airy and "flat"(not intonation wise, "color" wise) whenever I try to make the statement. Also, I'm having a lot of "spit" problems with a "spitty" sound many times through out the piece.. any suggestions for that?

A common mistake that students make in the first movement of the Saint-Saens Sonate is playing the opening too timidly.
It must be played with expression and enough projection to be heard in the back of the hall.
Much of the melodic material in this movement lies in the throat register of the clarinet. Play it full and with lots of diaphragm support...GBK

If your instrument is anything like mine, the open G's will tend to be flat. I use the bottom side key to bring the pitch up. It also seems to open up the tone too.

I use the 1st two fingers of the right hand to cover these 2 tone holes. The sound is much better!!

Different players and different instruments will tend to respond to the open g in different manners. I also feel that the opening theme although marked small "p" must be played in such a way as to project to the back of the hall while still sounding intimate...
