I've just be told that we are going to play On the town and....I'm the only Eb clarinettist in our orchestra, so lucky me [cool]

Does anyone have the Eb clarinet score for me so that I can study the piece in advance? Also I would like to know who has played the piece and your experience with it.....

If you are referring to the 3 Dances from On The Town, I just performed it last year.

The Eb clarinet part is contained in the Clarinet 1 part. Most orchestras use 2 different players, but the switches back and forth, although quick, are not impossible for one person.

There are very crucial exposed intonation issues, with the upper woodwinds in the 2nd movement.

The 3rd movement contains the famous Eb clarinet jazz solo which opens the movement.

Have fun and count carefully!

I believe that both John Moses and David Dow had the honor of playing it under Bernstein. Perhaps they will add their experiences...GBK

I'm indeed referring to the 3 Dances from On The Town. I've a recording from the first and the last movement, but I did never hear the second movement....

You've made me curious about the experience of John Moses and David Dow, It is a great opportunity to play this piece under Bernstein himself! I’ve always loved Berstein’s music and am very excited to play this piece.

Hi OpusII:
You can contact me by phone or email, and we can discuss my involvement with Lenny Bernstein and "3 Dances from On The Town."
GBK's comments are right on, so go with them.
If you'd like to hear a recording I did years ago, under Lenny's supervision, try "Jerome Robbin's Broadway," a CD we did, which includes the "3 Dances from On The Town."
Suffice it say, Lenny wanted us to "have fun" with his music. The little opening Eb solo must be happy & jazzy, but it takes some looking at before you really let go.
Robbins, Bernstein & Gemignani, our conductor, all had great comments about style and "feel" for Lenny's great score.
Call or email if you need more info, and have a Happy Holiday!
