And (seriously, really) a good CD of not-so-good clarinet music.

I would like to listen to really really good clarinet music and some more or less correct but NOT super-good music - same piece, of course - to see if I can detect any difference.

There are probably hundreds of well known, not-so-well known and really obscure recordings of clarinet players now on CDs, Yomargwyn. For example: some BB posters and/or their relatives have made CDs. I presume, however, you're looking for the commercial variety. It might be helpful if you could narrow your search down to areas of interest or, better, a specific category. What kinds of clarinet music do you like? Classic, "semi-classic" (if that's a valid term), easy listenin', "jazz", big-band, pop, country, folk (Klezmer, Baltic, etc.) and on and on. Is it for a gift, personal listening pleasure, share with someone, special event?

There are probably as many reasons to choose a particular style/artist as there are styles and artists.

If you like classical, start out with the "bible" -- the Mozart Clarinet Concerto with Robert Marcellus and the Cleveland Orchestra.

The cornerstone of any classical clarinetist's collection (at least for Americans). Build your collection from there.

My favorite clarinet CD is DoubleTrio - Green Dolphy Suite. The ensemble is violin, cello, doublebass, clarinet, bass clarinet, contrabass clarinet. It's one of the best CDs I have (not only of clarinet) and one of the best I've ever heard really. I think every clarinet player must know this CD.

Amazon.com has very helpful lists created by clarinet fans. Here are just a couple (I hope these links show up completely):

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/listmania/list-browse/-/3TYLRI3IOSPHY/qid=1102440836/sr=5-2/ref=sr_5_2/104-2864553-7785562 -- I can't recommend the Jon Manasse CD's highly enough!
