 Noisy Low E Key Mechanism
Author: John Stackpole

A question arising out of my inexperience....Buffet R-13, vintage 1975

When I release the Low E / B key I get a little "clack" . I only have to press the key a mm or so (nowhere near enough to actually close the holes) to make the noise and this is true for both the left-hand and right-hand keys. The noise seems to be coming from the location of the linkage where the lefthand key makes a "right hand turn" to rotate the rod that reaches to the lower holes. But it is hard to be sure.

Is this an inherently noisy mechanism or has one of those tiny pieces of cork fallen away from somewhere - can't see where? No other keys make a "rebound" clack.

The noise isn't awful, but I'll bet it would annoy the [bleep] out of any oboe player that I might sit next to someday. (Maybe I should try to make it louder?)

In that particular area, there could be many different reasons - at least a dozen, quickly identifiable by a good technician who has the instrument in hand.

It is certainly something you do not need to live with.
