It's confusing until you get the right one !
Certainly the different characters of the materials making up the ligature will make the sound and reed response different, but as a committed experimenter (and therefore having fallen for the adverts), I would still suggest that a search (above) should be carried out. Beware however, that you might end up being more confused by opinions !
Happy hunting !

I'm a dedicated experimenter as well. I find the search thrilling. I've tried all sorts of materials, all sorts of styles, and for the most part, they all work. Each ligature I have tried seems to have a slightly effect on playing here or there, but not so much of an affect that I couldn't adjust for it. (Meaning one might make higher notes speak out quickly, or one might make articulation slightly sluggish, one might require more air to play forte, one might require slightly more delicacy when hitting high A, B, or C etc. etc. - however all these things can be adjusted to in your daily playing)
So I settled for one of convenience. Not gonna tell which one (so as not to influence you one way or other) but at this point I'm well adjusted to it.
So my final answer is "no", it really doesn't matter what type of ligature you use. You'll find professionals using EVERY type of ligature, from cloth, to metal, to rubber, to string, and any variant inbetween.
