I'm looking to get some suggestions for a good mouthpiece for a plastic Yamaha YCL26. Probably in the no-more-than $25-30 dollar price range. The one I play on now is the one I got with it (6 years ago when I was in the 6th grade) and its a Rico Royal B5.

If you're looking at 25 - 30 bucks, a Fobes Debut fits the bill and does quite nicely.

Try the Clark Fobes Debut student mouthpiece. It should be in your price range and is a very good mouthpiece. You may also wish to try the David Hite Premiere anf the Gennusa Excellente mouthpieces.

The Rico Royal mouthpieces have to be the ABSOLUTE WORST mouthpieces ever offered for sale, anytime, anywhere, any century.
"-- Made from Graftonite™--- " (they should have left the graphite in the pencils)
Thick rails, thick tip, very resistant blowing, raised reed table, thin sound - nothing good whatsoever about them, except they are (sadly) indestructable.
Toss it in the landfill where it belongs. ( I think that the the half-life of lead is 22 years)
The Fobes Debut is a good entry level mouthpiece with a consistant, reed friendly facing and priced reasonably for students...GBK

I should have known when my middle school band teacher made the comment- "that's a strange looking mouthpiece!" Looking at it now, I see all of its faults very clearly- the strangely raised reed table, the horribly thick tip, the thick rails... ugh. And I always did wonder what it was made of, it doesn't have the texture of "regular" plastic. The music store people probably thought that since my clarinet was of such "high" quality (sarcasm, there, even though I rather like its keywork and sound) that they would put the worst mouthpiece with it to try to scare the poor student who bought it out of band!
But thanks for all your advice, it will definately hit the burn barrel once i get a good mouthpiece. I'll definately look into the Fobes Debut, and probably the Hite too, considering that I LOVE my Hite bass clarinet mouthpiece.
