Well, a friend of mine has this CSO that he ask me to teach him to play on. It really isn't that horrible of a clarinet and somehow he ended up w/ a decent non stock moutpiece. Well, we go to do his first "lesson" and it sounds horrible.
I'm getting really frustrated and then I realize he's incredibley flat. He was a half step flat on open g. Pretty much exactly. I played the clarinet and it's a little flat but nothing like that.
Is it just a loose embochure? This seems pretty extreme.
Thanks for your thoughts.

It might be the embouchure, and it might also be air speed. Brass players typically play with their tongue dropped to the bottom of their mouth. Have him try playing clarinet with the tongue in an "eeee" position. This'll speed up the air, focus the sound, and sharpen the pitch.

Thanks I hadn't realized that. That makes sense though.
Most likely I've have him play on my spare next time just to make sure it isn't the clarinet
