 Gigliotti Advantage Reeds
Author: Iacuras

It's time for me to buy a new box of bass clarinet reeds, and I have been debating between Vandorens, Rico Grand Concert Select, or Gigliotti Advantage. Which do you think is the best reed. I have been playing Bass for 2 years and play it in Wind Ensemble and Marching band. I have been playing vandoren strength 3 for all of the the time I have been playing Bass. Thanks for any advice.

I just bought a box of the Advantage for a student of mine. No reports yet on it.

There are other options as well. Depends on what sound you are looking for. You could go as far as getting a Tenor Sax Jazz Reed even! (Rico Jazz Select Filed Tenor Reed).

Why debate when you can just buy a box of each and try em for yourself. That way you aren't just comparing 1 reed to another but several.

Unfortunatly my parents won't let me buy more than one box at once. So any ideas on what I should try first, or should I just pick one?

Just curious... what's their reasoning behind that, Steve? (I have almost a dozen boxes open at the moment)

When I was a kid my parents viewed regular reed purchases as a wasteful extravagence. I explained that only a few per box played well enough (obviously, this is truer for a beginner than a more experienced person). When I said that my teacher had advised that this was normal, I was told that my teacher was as wasteful as I was (or that it was a conspiracy etc.). The a programme came on TV featuring the daily life of a jazz tenor player, and depicting him in a music shop buying 6 Rico reeds. "Oh, doing lots of playing at the moment?" said the shopkeeper (i.e. why buy as many as 6). My father said that proved the point in his favour, because it should be possible, as with the sax player, to play on all your reeds. There was no point in saying that a Rico user has no standards.

The Gigliotti PLUS reeds are better than the Advantage, but both are very, very good. But they are a pain to get as my regular distributor (WWBW) doesn't carry them - only a few suppliers have them.

I would say that the Grand Concert Reeds take slightly less work to get them to play well so I would get those if you have only 1 choice.

I use the Grand Concert and they almost always play great out of the box, so I would say get the Grand Concert reeds.

Well, I just ordered a box of the Gigliotti Reeds. I'll tell you all how they are once I get them.

Well, the reeds arived yesterday, and I have started playing them. They offer a richer, darker sound than Vanoren in my opinion. They take the strong points of my Bass and make them stronger, but they also take the weak points and make them weaker. The upper register from G(right above staff) to C(two ledger lines up) has always been stuffy and I have just barely been able to get out. With Gigliotti, they don't come out at all. Fortunatly I have an apointment with a tech this week.

Vandorens have a brilliant upper register. It is their lower register which is disappointing.

Iacuras - what is your MP and Reed strength setup? (your bass)

I wonder if your reed is too light

I will be rehearsing "The Sorcerors Apprentice" (Dukas) tonight with a Legere #3.25 on my bass clarinet (Walter Grabner CXBS) mouthpiece. During practice, the legeres have out-performed my Vandy 3.5 canes, particulrily with regard to tone quality and response, especially in that "problem" upper register. And, they do not change halfway through the concert. The only advantage that a cane reed has over a Legere, is the capability of playing with more volume (louder). But at this point, with the playing range of the Dukas being in such a high register, I need consistancy and response over amplitude, and my choice is the Legere.

But what I really need is place to breath in that section just before #52. Yikes!!

Dave,
I have a woodwind Company mouthpiece with a #3 reed. I took my Bass clarinet into the tech today, and he said he found a small crack which is the problem with the upper register.
