 Which plastic Eb
Author: Ron Jr.

Which plastic Eb clarinet do people prefer? I'm just beginning to consider playing one.

How will these compare with my Buttet? Will it be like going from an Audi roadster to a AMC Gremlin?

Thanks,
Ron Jr.

Selmer Bundy Resonite effer. Compared to a Buffet (Buttet??)--it will be like going from a Caddy to a Chevy. It will "go just as fast" (play as good) but the "ride will not be a smooth" (harder to play in tune and voice in the high register).

There are many threads--some very recent--that will provide you with more insight. Try a search..........and good luck. Effer playing isn't for sissies.

I just abandoned any notion of buying an Eb clarinet. I was looking at the prices and plastic Eb clarinets cost roughly $600. If I were to get it overhauled in the future (if not immediately) it would cost about $400. I can also hear the words of my repairman: "Why are you bringing me this plastic horn?"

For the life of me I can't imagine spending $400 on a $600 horn. However spending that much on my Buffet Eb is much more tolerable because it is more of an investment.

Ron,
$400 for a clarinet overhaul is outrageous, IMHO. The problem is not the availability of instruments --- it's your choice of repairman. Shouldn't cost more that $200 for the WORKS.

I'm pretty sure a Bundy Eb went for about $150 on eBay recently

I've just bought a Bundy eefer on eBay too. I'm looking forward to trying it out, but I'm sure the neighbours will be horrified! [whoa]

Joanna,
Get a good mouthpiece (e.g. Fobes or Hite) for your eefer and with some practicing on your part the neighbors should be safe from harm or horror.

My plastic Bundy plays just about as well as my [pro-overhauled] Noblet wood. Of course, I'm far from expert on it, as in Till ---spiegal . Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

I got a plastic Bundy eefer on e-bay, with shipping, for $45. It was in great shape. The case even came with the original key (and an original reed which I disposed of). It was actually listed just as an estate sale Bundy clarinet, and the reed was included in the description. It was just from the picture I could tell if was an eefer. Because it was incorrectly advertised, it got no bids besides mine. I spent $20 getting some pads replaced, and then spent another $50 on another mouthpiece. It plays great. I did find that the new mouthpiece improved the sound a lot. I bought it as a novelty for me, but my son has used it in his concert band.

Have fun looking.

David - I received my new 'baby' the other day and have had great fun with it - it's a nice little instrument in good condition. I've followed your advice, and should be getting a Hite mpc in the post (another eBay purchase) in a week or two. Thanks!
