Hi all! I am the principal bass clarinetist in my schools wind ensemble, and the top of each instrument get to play with a full orchestra once a week. I was really looking forward to this and found out there wasn't a Bass Clarinet part. Will I find this often in Full Ochestral music, or is this a strange occurance? Thanks in advance.

In my 17 years of orchestra experience, most of the repertoireI have played does not call for bass clarinet. Sad but true for bass cl. players. But I have seen the occasional part in bass clef for "A" bass.

It really depends on what pieces the ensemble performs. If the director is mad about Beethoven and Mozart, you won't be called upon. From Berlioz-ish and forward through music history, many pieces call for a bass clarinet. Contemporary pieces especially call upon the "auxiliary" wind instruments.

If the piece was written in the last 150 years, there is a chance it may call for Bb Bass Clarinet (or Bass Clarinet in A, or Bass Clarinet reading bass clef).
Before approximately 1850 - bring a good book to read ...GBK

The bass clarinetist is the Maytag Man of the orchestra (sitting around waiting for the phone to ring.....). I'd recommend you get your soprano clarinet chops up, including Eb clarinet, and be prepared to play classical alto and tenor saxes too, if in the future you want any semblance of steady orchestral work.
