Are there any available recordings where Kal's playing can be heard? I know he played in a lot of top broadway shows, so perhaps something has been re-issued onto a CD?

I did a search on Barnes and Noble's website and found 2 CDs where he is mentioned as playing.
1. Barber's Adagio
2. Aria (a Richard Stoltzman CD)
Both were released in 1997

I believe that on both recordings Opperman is conducting the Kal Opperman Clarinet Choir...GBK

That could be. I guess I should read it again more carefully. I thought there were performances on the Stoltzman CD, but could be mistaken.

Hmm. I read it again and you could very well be right GBK. Under performances it reads Kalman Opperman Clarinet Choir. So, if he doesn't play with the choir he is conducting it. Someone more versed on him than I am needs to answer.

You may want to check with some of Kal's better known NYC students like Steve Hartman. I would think he would know if anyone would. You might try posting to the klarinet list. Steve read that last I knew.

I just happened to 'tune in' to the Bulletin Board this morning.
Kal is definitely conducting on the Richard Stoltzman CDs. The Choir also appeared on a Stoltzman Christmas CD, called 'Hark.'
Off the top of my head, here are some of the Broadway shows in which Kal played: "La Cage aux Folles," "Woman of the Year," "Applause," "Mack and Mabel," and "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn."
I will look for more information and/or ask Kal himself within the next day or two.

I've just found a list of the Broadway shows that Kal played. In most cases, I'm sure, he is on the Original Cast Album.
"Peter Pan," "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn," "The Brass Ring," "Arabian Nights," "Fanny," "Li'l Abner," "Goldilocks," "Destry Rides Again," "Irma La Douce," "Oliver," "Ben Franklin in Paris," "110 in the Shade," "Mame," "Dear World," "Applause," "Seesaw," "Mack and Mable," "Very Good Eddie," "Woman of the Year," and "La Cage aux Folles."

Note that in many (most) of these shows, Kal played mostly alto sax, plus any solo clarinet licks. He also told me that many of the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoon sound tracks were done on the east coast, and that Al Gallodoro and he played the clarinet parts. As far as I know, he has made no solo recordings.

P.S. to Steve Hartman -- You were amazing on basset horn in the Mozart Requiem last month. Where did you guys find the instruments, and mouthpieces were you using?

In the last few shows (since I've known Kal) his book was always Clarinet, E-flat Clarinet and Tenor Sax.
