In the post for the clarinetfest it was mentioned that they are now available. How do you like them? How do they compare to Vandoren or Grand Concert bass reeds?

According to Phil Shapiro: The chief tester for the Gonzalez Bass Clarinet reeds was J. Lawrie Bloom and he has been offering his expertise in the design of the final template.
At this point there is limited production of the bass clarinet reeds as additional feedback is coming in from other bass clarinetists around the country. (I'm sure Phil would appreciate any voluntary feedback from others who have used the reeds)
When all comments have been collected, a decision will be made whether to tweak the reeds a bit more or to go into final production.
This is standard procedure when designing a new reed. The FOF clarinet reeds took the better part of a year to obtain the final version which we now see.
As most Gonzalez users will attest, the FOF design and production of both clarinet and saxophone reeds has been very successful ...GBK

Thanks for the info... I understand from W. Grabner that his mouthpiece facings are quite similar to that which Lawrie Bloom plays (I play on a Grabner mp); I think he even said Mr. Bloom's main backup mp was one of his!... so, I sincerely hope that the new bass reeds will be a step up from the other reeds on the market, like when the FOF reeds became available.

Categorically, NO, there are no Gonzalez bass clarinet reeds for sale yet. I know because I've been calling the company every few weeks, and every time i do, they say "call again next month" or "call again in two weeks," and this has been going on evern since the bass reeds were announced, which is like months.
So we'll see. I'm under-whelmed by the Gonzalez Bbs, they're not a patch on the ass of the Steuers I used to play on soprano, and I'm hoping the bass reeds will be better than their soprano reeds. Hopefully our patience will be rewarded!!

I guess I should reply to this one...
After testing of the first batch, we decided to make a few modifications. This second batch is getting tested and as the results come in we'll either say "Eureka!" or go back and change them again. I know how frustrating it is to have to wait and wait. Trust me Doug, I'm not enjoying this either...but it's necessary if we're going to present the best product we can. Once they're done then you guys will either like them or you won't, but at least we'll know we put out our best effort. Just like we did with the FOF's which, so far, seem to be slightly popular.
And if the wait wasn't worth it for you Doug, you'll have my sincere apologies and no hard feelings. And your Steuers will have a patch for their knees as well.
Happy tooting everyone,
-Phil
