hello, i recently purchased a new buffet festival clarinet. well, like so many others, i managed to the get buffet hanky swab stuck in the top joint. the swab was really really stuck. basically what i had to do to get it out was very carefully shred it, and disect the cloth peice by peice from the instrument. it took me a VERY long time but i felt it was worth it because i didnt want to pull it so hard that it broke off the register tube. anyway, the thing is out now, and my clarinet plays just as it did when i bought it, but i noticed one difference. the wood where the swab was stuck appears to be a more matte surface then the rest of the bore. it looks like some of the oil was rubbed off in my effort to free the swab from the instrument. should i oil it or just let it go? i know that your not supposed to oil new instruments, but theres a noticable difference between where the swab was and wasnt. please help.

Let it go. You just rubbed some of the shine off the bore. No harm done.
Go to a druggist or medical supply store and buy yourself a very long straight hemostat (basically a surgical clamp that looks like a long, slender pair of scissors). If you jam another swab, use the hemostat to clamp onto the cloth and back it out. You don't want to shred the swab in the bore because you leave lint behind that can get stuck to pads or muck up tone holes. It would be $7 well spent.

That's why I use a Gigliotti swab. It has a ribbon at the bottom end, with which I can pull the swab out backward if it gets stuck.

I never use the Buffett swabs. They do tend to get stuck in the bore. Silk swabs are much better. The Buffet swabs do make good handkerchiefs though, if you cut off the cord.

Yes, I have always found the Buffet swabs to be too bulky. You need to trim two corners to prevent sticking.
