Hi,
I need some opinions on Selmer's crystal mouthpieces (close facing) as well as tip opening measurements. I have gotten so used to actual measurements that the terms, open, medium, close, have become somewhat meaningless. Does any one have experience with the closed facing?
Regards
Mark

I play a Selmer #2 with 2.5 Vandoren reeds so it's a pretty open face. It plays pretty much the same as a Clarion HS* from the 70s. However, a Clarion HS* from the 1950s reacts differently on the same horn, not exactly sure why. I use these mouthpieces on older larger bore clarinets, pre 1954 Buffets, Leblanc Symphonie/Dynamique/LL My main horn at the moment is a Leblanc Symphonie and the #2 with an LL barrel works the best on it and helps reduce the stuffy middle D & E

Good comments, Bill, I also have experienced a degree of confusion on comparing O'Briens [ numbered series , with some S 's {for "short" lay?}] and Selmer Clarions [lettered series {see in brochures}] where some "infamous" [IMHO] HS* s play well ! I've had most of my glasses refaced, may still have a "virgin" when I have a few hours to explore. All of mine are [IMHO] big bores and are at least as large as my Sel CT and LeB Dyn2 barrels on which they play very well. Wish I could describe better now, Mark, will try. Don
Thanx, Mark, Don

Ok here are some more measurements
1950 Clarion HS*, ID is ~14.95 mm, facing is 32.35 mm
1970 Clarion HS*, ID is ~ 14.80 mm, facing is 31.20 mm
Selmer #2, ID is ~ 14.75 mm, facinging is 30.83 mm
Now if I lay them on a flat surface I would say the tip opening is the same for all. Which is why I guess 2.5 Vandorens work pretty much the same in each of them. All mouthpieces are as purchased.
Note: ID is taken ~.5" into the mouthpiece from the edge of the exit.

This is kinda related, kinda not....my Selmer clarion HS* has a little bitty chip out of the tip...Bill tells me it is junk because in his experience the things don't play worth a darn with a chip in them...but mine plays fine. so what's the deal? Is this a fluke of some kind?
