appraisal of "PITT AMERICAN" metal clari
Author: Andrea Pratt

Hi.
My name is Andrea and I'm a high school kid from Arizona. My mom and I were going christmas shopping at a Saver's and we saw this grimy, beat-up old metal clarinet that we at first thought was a soprano sax. It was priced at $50, but we think it may be more than that. It was all one piece, and on the bell it said "PITT AMERICAN". Any information you can dig up for me would be very much appreciated.

Thank you, and have a good day.

Old student grade marching instrument. Fun to have and diddle around with as a piece of clarinet history. I wouldn't use it for serious music playing. It would not really be more than $50.

If you buy it, make sure that it has the "barrel" or that the one piece construction is the design that has the enlarged "cup" on the end. The metal clarinets take standard mouthpieces and without either the barrel or the enlarged cup on the end, it won't be playable. The barrels very often get lost.

Dee is spot on, as usual.

There is no reason to settle for a beat up, grundgy one.
If you are patient, you can get a fairly nice looking one for $50 on eBay. I have never fooled with a Pitt, but it was not one of the most common ones -- which I don't take to be a good sign.

Keep in mind that 99% of old metal clarinets will need to have all pads, most cork and some springs replaced. Sellers, however, will tell you the instrument 'looks playable'. Plan on $150 or so to get it restored.
