I have tried two historical copies by Guntram Wolf. One was a copy of a 5- keyed clarinet by A. Grenser. Funnily enough, it was actually made by Jochen Seggelke (of Schwenk und Seggelke), who used to work for Guntram Wolf before opening up his own shop in Bamberg. It was a wonderful instrument and played very well.
The other was a 2-keyed copy of a Denner alto chalumeau. The mouthpiece was connected to the "barrel" and was also made of boxwood. It seemed to play quite well, but I can't compare it to other instruments because it's the only chalumeau I've tried!
We're busy rehearsing an opera by Rameau at the moment. The bassoon players are using instruments by Guntram Wolf (A=392 Hz!) and are very happy with them.
Guntram Wolf is also famous for making childrens instruments. I've played a little clarinet that he made, which is smaller and has less keys than a normal clarinet. It was kind of fun to play, but I'm not sure how much it would help young children to learn?

I watch my favorite shows in that shed... the soundproofing only serves to contain my screams... the instructions encoded inside Anime plots are more difficult than the directions to assemble a kiddie swingset.
Thank the Gods for simple things, like the Nielsen concerto...
