Im heading to a music store to try the yamaha line of clarinets in a week. I'm familiar with buffets, leblancs, and selmers but do not have any experience with the Yamaha line. I'd like to be educated when i go in. Have any of you played any of these instruments? I'm also curious what the intent is of each model (R13 copy? dark? bright? etc)

None of these will be appreciably better than your LL.
Best scale on ANY clarinet I have ever played was a YCL-72.
It was also dull as toast.
Most lovely sound I have heard was from a YCL-SEv, but the scale was all over the place...
I understood the YCL-CS was a spot on copy of the R13, for what that's worth. I would be more interested in buying a prior year model on clearance... these are expensive instruments with terrible depreciation.

I have tried the both the normal and V series and I like the SE/SEV ones compared to the CS. ( I have played on a yamaha SE for 1 year and tried 4 SEV and 3 CS-V from the music stores)
For those instruments I tried, I felt that the difference was mainly in the upper clarion notes... maybe you can let me know how you find them. I would feel that the CS plays with a brighter sound than the SE, but I think every one has their own perceptions of bright or dark sound.
