Hey, fellow Aussies, I need your help!
I'd like to know of any competitions, eisteddfodds, or scholarships that clarinetists are eligible for. I'd like to make a list with links not only for a website (that I'm making) but also for personal use too.
So can anyone help me out? Links would be great, not sure we're allowed to post phone numbers or addresses here are we?
Thanks in advance!

Hi
I know in Brisbane there is a competition around September organised by the Queensland Clarinet and Saxophone society...don't know much about it though.
I don't think there are too many scholarships that apply to clarinet specifically, however there are a couple of organisations which do offer grants and scholarships for a wide range of arts related projects/ideas.
Try these:
Ian Potter Cultural Trust
http://www.ianpotter.org.au/ipct.html
Churchill Fellowships
http://www.churchilltrust.com.au/
I don't know what state you live in but there should be arts body there (such as ArtsWA or Arts Qld etc...) and usually they do offer a number of grants. There is also the Australia Council which should come up on any search though from memory I don't think there was much there for individual instrumentalists. It really depends on what you want a scholarship for.
This place might help you look for stuff in Oz but....it costs $32.95 to actually search through the database (I wonder if you can get a scholarship to search through their database)
http://www.grantsearch.com/
And if you are really desperate there's always the Nescafe Big Break (www.nescafe.com.au) but you would probably have to do something weird and wacky to come through with that one...
Good luck finding information, a list like that would be a really good thing to have...I'd love to see the result of all your hard work (I might even pay $32.95 for it...)

How advanced or specialised do you want these events to be? Diz and Alexis mention a couple of big ones, but are you looking also for any local eisteddfod in which clarinetists of some standard can enter? I assume there are a number in most capitals, but close to where I live in Sin City is the Warringah Eisteddfod, which has various instrumental sections and draws some fairly advanced young players. Another local orchestra, the Ku-Ring-Gai Philharmonic, has an annual concerto competition.
That sort of thing?
Oh yes, the NSW Clarinet and Saxophone society has an annual Mitchell Lurie competition. I believe the prize is the use for one year of the great man's own instrument. I did it 15 years ago, and it was fairly informally run (entry on the night), which made it more inviting for those of us who wanted to play but didn't seriously expect to win. The better performances were excellent.
